The medical name for a “tummy tuck” is abdominoplasty.  It aims to create a flatter stomach by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the muscles underneath.

Patients opting for this type of surgery are often female patients who have had children.  Their skin has been stretched by pregnancy and often despite exercise and weight loss, still has a saggy appearance.

The aim of abdominoplasty is to correct both the excess skin and the stretching of the underlying muscles.  Sometimes liposuction is carried out at the same time, to remove fat and improve the shape of the waist.  However, it is important to point out that the purpose of abdominoplasty is not weight loss.  Patients who get the best results from this type of surgery tend to be relatively slim, but just have lax skin or poor muscle tone.  Patients who are very large may be more suited to body contouring or liposuction surgery.

You will have a thorough consultation with the surgeon prior to the operation to discuss the best option(s) for you.  If you are considering this type of surgery, we strongly advise that you wait until you have finished having children, as further pregnancies are likely to undo the benefits.
