Liposuction (or liposcultpture, which means exactly the same thing) removes fat from carefully targeted areas of the body to improve a person’s overall body contour and appearance. It is not designed as a weight loss solution. It simply removes the fat between the skin and the underlying structures.
Liposuction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The length of the operation depends on how much fat is being removed and from how many different areas of the body. The most common areas to treat are the abdomen, hips and thighs: followed by the buttocks, arms, knees and the area under the chin.
Generally speaking, younger patients, with tighter skin, tend to get the best results from liposuction. This is because their skin usually bounces back quicker than those with more mature skin that has lost some of its prior elasticity. However, many older patients do still achieve very good results from liposuction.
The fat cells that are removed by liposuction are removed permanently, however further fat can accumulate again in the future if you gain weight. Therefore we always recommend that you combine liposuction with a healthy diet and exercise regime to ensure the results are maintained.
